Where the campaign breaks even

Gross profit (revenue × margin) at ½× to 2× your revenue. Above the gold line the campaign earns more than it spent.

ROI vs ROAS — what’s the difference?

  • ROAS (return on ad spend) = revenue ÷ ad spend. A 4× ROAS means $4 back for every $1 spent, before product costs.
  • ROI (return on investment) = profit ÷ ad spend × 100, where profit accounts for your margin. This is the number that tells you if you actually made money.
  • Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin. Below it you lose money even with a “positive” ROAS.

Why margin matters

A 3× ROAS looks great until you remember a 30% margin means break-even is 3.33×. Always plug your real margin in. To push ROI up, lower your effective cost per action (better targeting, creatives and landing pages) or raise conversion value. Compare pricing models with the CPM/CPC/CPA calculator and read the CPA marketing guide.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

What’s a good ROAS?

It depends entirely on your margin. As a rule, you need ROAS above your break-even (1 ÷ margin) to profit. Many performance advertisers target 2–4× on healthy margins.

Does this include product or shipping costs?

Use the gross-margin field to fold those in: e.g. 40% margin means 60% of revenue is cost of goods. The ROI and profit outputs then reflect real money.
